P0011 Camshaft Position A — Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

The variable valve timing system is more advanced than commanded — usually a sludged oil-control solenoid rather than a broken camshaft.

Misfire & ignition

Variable valve timing rotates the camshaft relative to the crank to trade low-end torque for top-end breathing. The ECU commands a position and verifies it through the cam sensor. P0011 means the cam is sitting more advanced than asked, or is not responding to commands at all. Because the whole system is driven by engine oil pressure through a small solenoid screen, oil condition is central to this code in a way it is not for most others.

Can I keep driving?

Driveable

Yes, though with rough idle and less power. Check the oil before you drive it far — if the level is low, that may be both the cause and a bigger risk than the code.

How serious

Moderate. Drivability and economy suffer, and the underlying oil-flow problem tends to affect other hydraulic parts of the engine over time.

Symptoms you'll notice

What causes P0011

Ordered by what to check first — how likely each cause is, weighed against what it costs to rule out. Working down the list in order is what stops you replacing an expensive part to fix a cheap problem.

01

Clogged VVT oil-control solenoid screen

The most common cause by a wide margin. The solenoid has a fine mesh filter that sludge blocks, and the phaser stops responding. Often fixed by removing, cleaning and refitting the solenoid — a genuinely cheap repair that many shops jump straight past.

02

Low, dirty, or wrong-viscosity engine oil

The system is hydraulic. Overdue oil, a low level, or the wrong grade will set this code on its own. Check this before spending anything.

03

Failed VVT solenoid

The solenoid can fail electrically or stick mechanically even with clean oil.

04

Worn cam phaser

Internal wear lets the phaser drift from its commanded position. The more expensive answer, and worth confirming with live data before committing.

05

Timing chain wear

A stretched chain shifts the baseline the ECU measures against, and typically sets P0016 alongside this code.

How to diagnose it

  1. Check oil level, condition and service history first — this is the cause often enough that skipping it wastes real money.
  2. Remove the VVT solenoid and inspect its screen for sludge; clean it and clear the code before doing anything else.
  3. Test the solenoid's resistance against spec, and check that it gets voltage when commanded.
  4. Compare commanded against actual cam position on live data while raising RPM.
  5. If the code persists with a clean, working solenoid and good oil, investigate the phaser and chain.
