P0101 Mass Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem

The airflow sensor is reporting a number the computer doesn't believe given the throttle position and engine speed.

Fuel & air

The MAF sensor measures the mass of air entering the engine, and every fuelling decision starts from that number. P0101 is not a dead sensor — a dead one sets P0102 or P0103. It means the sensor is alive but its reading doesn't correlate with what the throttle position and RPM say it should be. Very often the sensor is fine and something else is disturbing the airflow it sees.

Can I keep driving?

Driveable

Yes, generally, with hesitation and poor economy. Fix it before it fouls plugs or the converter.

How serious

Moderate. Drivability and economy suffer, and a badly wrong MAF reading can cause lean or rich damage over time.

Symptoms you'll notice

What causes P0101

Ordered by what to check first — how likely each cause is, weighed against what it costs to rule out. Working down the list in order is what stops you replacing an expensive part to fix a cheap problem.

01

Contaminated MAF sensor element

Dust, and especially oil from an over-oiled performance air filter, coats the hot-wire or hot-film element and slows its response. Cleaning with dedicated MAF cleaner fixes this a large fraction of the time. Spray only — never wipe the element.

02

Air leak between the MAF and the throttle body

A split intake boot or a loose clamp downstream of the sensor lets in air the sensor never measured, which is exactly the correlation failure this code describes. Check the boot by flexing it — cracks often hide on the underside.

03

Dirty or restricted air filter

A choked filter disturbs the airflow profile across the sensor and skews its reading.

04

Improperly installed intake components

The MAF needs a specific length of straight duct to read accurately. Aftermarket intakes that move the sensor or shorten the tube commonly set this code, and no amount of cleaning will fix that.

05

Failed MAF sensor

Genuine sensor failure happens, but it belongs after the cheaper causes, not before them.

06

Vacuum leak or exhaust restriction

Large vacuum leaks skew the correlation, and a plugged catalytic converter restricts flow enough to make the MAF reading implausible at higher RPM.

How to diagnose it

  1. Inspect the air filter and the intake ducting between the filter and throttle body for splits, loose clamps and oil residue.
  2. Clean the MAF element with MAF-specific cleaner and re-test before buying anything.
  3. Compare actual MAF grams-per-second on live data against the expected value for the engine — a rough rule of thumb is roughly one gram per second per litre of displacement at warm idle.
  4. Check fuel trims: consistent positive or negative trims tell you which way the sensor is skewed.
  5. If an aftermarket intake is fitted, refit the stock airbox and see whether the code clears.
