P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off
The torque converter lock-up clutch isn't engaging when commanded — the usual complaint is a shudder at steady highway speed and worse fuel economy.
Transmission
At cruising speed the torque converter locks mechanically to eliminate the slip a fluid coupling normally has, which is worth real fuel economy. P0741 means the module commanded lock-up and the engine and transmission speeds never converged the way they should. The classic symptom is a shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips, usually between about 40 and 60 mph under light throttle.

Driveable
Yes in the short term, with worse economy and possible shuddering. Don't tow with it and don't leave it for months — the heat is cumulative.
How serious
Moderate. Continued slipping generates heat, and heat is what kills automatic transmissions. Left long enough it turns a solenoid job into a rebuild.
Symptoms you'll notice
- Shudder or vibration at steady highway speed under light throttle
- Noticeably worse fuel economy on the highway
- Higher than expected RPM at cruise
- Transmission running hot
- Check-engine light
What causes P0741
Ordered by what to check first — how likely each cause is, weighed against what it costs to rule out. Working down the list in order is what stops you replacing an expensive part to fix a cheap problem.
Degraded transmission fluid
Check first. Worn-out fluid loses the friction properties the lock-up clutch depends on, and shudder from old fluid is common enough that a fluid and filter service is a reasonable first move on many vehicles. Use exactly the specified fluid — the wrong friction modifier causes this symptom by itself.
Failed torque converter clutch solenoid
A frequent cause and, on many transmissions, accessible without removing the transmission. Test its resistance against spec.
Worn torque converter clutch
The friction material inside the converter wears out. This means replacing the converter, which means removing the transmission.
Valve body problems
Stuck valves or wear in the valve body prevent correct hydraulic pressure reaching the lock-up clutch.
Wiring fault to the solenoid
An open or shorted circuit in the internal harness or its pass-through connector. Cheaper than the alternatives and worth ruling out.
Low transmission fluid level
Insufficient pressure to apply the clutch. Simple, cheap and genuinely common.
How to diagnose it
- Check fluid level and condition first — dark or burnt fluid points at a service, and possibly at more.
- Confirm the shudder's character: a rumble-strip feel at steady light-throttle cruise is the textbook lock-up shudder.
- Watch engine RPM against vehicle speed on live data at cruise to see whether lock-up is happening at all.
- Test the torque converter clutch solenoid's resistance and its circuit continuity.
- Check for other transmission codes that suggest a broader problem.
