P2096 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean (Bank 1)
The sensor after the catalytic converter is reading lean — most often a small exhaust leak rather than anything expensive.

On many modern engines the ECU makes a fine fuelling adjustment based on the downstream oxygen sensor as well as the upstream one. P2096 means that downstream trim ran to its lean limit. Exhaust leak between converter and downstream sensor
The most common cause by a wide margin. A cracked pipe, a rusted seam, a leaking gasket or a failed flex joint draws in air that the sensor reads as lean. Check this before anything else — it's cheap and it's usually the answer.
Failing downstream oxygen sensor
An aged or contaminated sensor biased lean. The next most likely cause after a leak.
Genuine lean condition upstream
If P0171 is stored too, the engine really is running lean and the downstream trim is simply following it. Fix the upstream cause and this clears with it.
Failing catalytic converter
A converter that can't store oxygen properly skews downstream readings, usually with P0420 alongside.
Wiring or connector fault at the downstream sensor
Corrosion underneath the vehicle adding resistance to the signal.
How to diagnose it
- Inspect the entire exhaust from the converter back to the downstream sensor for leaks. Listen with the engine cold — leaks are loudest before the metal expands and seals up.
- Check whether P0171 or P0420 are stored alongside, which redirects the diagnosis upstream.
- Compare upstream and downstream sensor voltages on live data.
- Inspect the downstream sensor's connector for corrosion.
- Smoke test the exhaust if a leak is suspected but can't be located by ear.
