P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

The built-in heater in the upstream oxygen sensor has failed — the sensor can't reach operating temperature fast enough to be trusted.

Oxygen sensors

An oxygen sensor only reads accurately above roughly 600°F, so each has an internal heating element that brings it up to temperature within seconds of startup rather than waiting for exhaust heat. P0135 means the ECU detected that heater circuit drawing wrong current, or none. Until the sensor is hot the ECU runs open-loop on a default fuel map, which is why the main cost is fuel economy right after a cold start.

Failed heater element inside the sensor

The most common cause. The element is inside a sealed sensor, so it isn't serviceable — the sensor gets replaced. Check its resistance across the heater pins against spec to confirm before buying.

Blown fuse on the heater circuit

Check this first. It costs nothing and it's often shared with other circuits, so a blown fuse may explain several codes at once. If it blows again immediately, there's a short to chase.

Damaged wiring or connector

Oxygen sensor harnesses run along the exhaust and get cooked and chafed. Melted insulation where a wire has touched the exhaust is a common find, and much cheaper than a sensor.

Corroded connector

Road spray and heat cycling corrode the pins, adding resistance the ECU reads as a heater fault.

Relay or ECU driver fault

Less common, but a failed heater relay or ECU output driver will set the code with a perfectly good sensor fitted.

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the fuse for the oxygen sensor heater circuit before anything else.
  2. Inspect the sensor's harness where it runs near the exhaust for melted or chafed insulation.
  3. Measure heater element resistance across the appropriate two pins and compare with spec — typically a few ohms, and an open circuit confirms a dead element.
  4. Verify the heater circuit gets battery voltage with the key on.
  5. Check the connector for corrosion and backed-out pins.
