P0131 O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
The upstream oxygen sensor's voltage is stuck low, meaning it's reporting a permanently lean mixture — which may or may not be true.

A healthy upstream oxygen sensor oscillates rapidly between roughly 0.1 and 0.9 volts as the ECU trims fuel back and forth across the ideal ratio. P0131 means the signal sat down near the bottom of that range and stayed there. Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor
A leak before the sensor pulls in outside air during exhaust pulses, and the sensor honestly reports the oxygen it sees. Cheap to find, frequently missed.
Failed or contaminated sensor
Sensors are poisoned over time by oil, coolant and silicone from the wrong sealant. A contaminated sensor goes lazy and eventually sticks.
Short to ground in the signal wire
A chafed wire grounding out pins the reading low regardless of the sensor's condition.
Corroded or wet connector
Moisture in the connector drags the signal down.
How to diagnose it
- Check for other codes. P0171 alongside points at a real lean condition rather than a bad sensor.
- Watch the sensor's live voltage — a healthy one swings quickly; one flat near 0.1V is either stuck or seeing a real lean condition.
- Inspect the exhaust manifold and pipe upstream of the sensor for leaks.
- Read fuel trims: strongly positive trims mean the ECU believes the sensor and is adding fuel, consistent with a genuine lean condition.
- Inspect the sensor wiring for chafing and the connector for moisture and corrosion.
