P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

The upstream oxygen sensor still works, but it's reacting too slowly for the computer to trim fuel accurately.

Oxygen sensors

The ECU measures how quickly the sensor swings between rich and lean readings. A new sensor switches several times a second; an aged one gets sluggish long before it fails outright. P0133 is that sluggishness crossing a threshold. It's essentially a wear code — most often the honest answer is that the sensor is simply old.

The usual answer. These are wear items with a service life typically around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and slow response is exactly how they age out.

Contamination from oil, coolant or fuel additives

An engine burning oil or leaking coolant internally coats the sensor and slows it down. Silicone from the wrong RTV sealant poisons them too — always use sensor-safe sealant near the intake and exhaust.

Small exhaust leak near the sensor

Leaked air dilutes the sample and blunts the swings the ECU is measuring.

Weak sensor heater

A heater that's degrading but hasn't set its own code leaves the sensor cooler than ideal and therefore slower.

Wiring resistance

Corrosion in the connector adds resistance that damps the signal.

How to diagnose it

  1. Watch the sensor's live waveform and count switches per second at around 2500 RPM — a healthy sensor manages several; a lazy one visibly crawls.
  2. Check the sensor's age and mileage against its service life.
  3. Inspect for exhaust leaks near the sensor.
  4. Look for signs of oil burning or coolant loss that would keep poisoning a replacement.
  5. Check the connector for corrosion.
