P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1)
The knock sensor that listens for detonation isn't reporting properly, so the ECU pulls timing as a precaution and the engine feels flat.
Misfire & ignition
A knock sensor is a microphone bolted to the block, listening for the sharp rap of detonation. When it reports knock, the ECU retards ignition timing to protect the pistons. P0325 means the signal from that sensor is out of range, shorted, or missing entirely. Because the ECU can no longer tell whether the engine is knocking, it defaults to safe, retarded timing — which is why the usual complaint is lost power rather than a noise.

Driveable
Yes. The engine runs in a conservative timing mode — noticeably softer, especially uphill or towing — but it is not fragile in that state.
How serious
Moderate. Nothing breaks immediately, but you lose power and fuel economy, and you lose the protection that stops detonation from damaging pistons on cheap fuel or a hot day.

What causes P0325
Ordered by what to check first — how likely each cause is, weighed against what it costs to rule out. Working down the list in order is what stops you replacing an expensive part to fix a cheap problem.
Failed knock sensor
These live in a hot, vibrating, salt-sprayed spot and eventually crack or corrode internally. On many V-engines the sensor sits under the intake manifold, which is what makes a cheap part into a long job.
Damaged wiring or connector
The harness runs across the top of a hot engine. Chafed insulation, a green corroded connector, or a pin backed out of its housing all read the same as a dead sensor — and are far cheaper to fix. Always inspect before buying the part.
Incorrect installation torque
A knock sensor reads through its clamping load. If it was replaced and not torqued to spec, or thread sealant got between it and the block, it will not read correctly even though the part is new.
Actual engine knock
Worth ruling out before condemning the sensor: low-octane fuel, carbon buildup raising compression, or a cooling problem can produce genuine detonation that the sensor is correctly reporting.
How to diagnose it
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, chafing and backed-out pins before ordering anything.
- Measure the sensor's resistance against the service-manual spec, and check for continuity to ground through the harness back to the ECU.
- Watch knock-retard values on live data during a test drive to see whether the ECU is actually pulling timing.
- Listen for genuine pinging under load, and try a tank of higher-octane fuel to see whether the behaviour changes.
